PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display having high contrast and excellent viewing angle characteristics and suppressing color irregularity without increasing the number of complicated processes such as a photoresist process or without requiring sophisticated lamination techniques. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display having a configuration that a liquid crystal layer 100 having, for example, negative dielectric anisotropy held between a first substrate 101 and a second substrate and that voltage is applied between a common electrode 102 on the first substrate 101 and a pixel electrode 114 on the second substrate 110, the pixel electrode 114 is covered with the common electrode 102 and in a high symmetric form. By this configuration, the electric field on driving is tilted against the substrate and the alignment of the liquid crystal in one pixel is naturally divided into a plurality of domains to widen the viewing angle.
