Vinyl bromide-acrylonitrile copolymers are prepared by chilling to below ambient temperature and at least to below 25‹ C., a monomer mixture of at least 50% acrylonitrile and 1-50% vinyl bromide and contacting the chilled mixture with an aqueous redox catalyst in a polymerization zone at 30-60‹ C. A third monomer may be present, e.g. vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, methyl acrylate, acrylic acid, styrene, methyl vinyl pyridine or vinyl benzene sulphonic acid. The monomers are preferably cooled to 0-15‹ C. The catalyst may be potassium persulphate hydrogen peroxide, sodium peroxide or sodium perborate with sulphur dioxide, alkali metal or ammonium bisulphite or sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate and preferably an iron salt. The pH is preferably below 6. The products are used for spinning fibres.
