METHOD FOR PRODUCING LIGHT-TRANSMITTING MEMBER AND LIGHT-TRANSMITTING MEMBER PRODUCED THEREBY

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a light-transmitting member which retains excellent irradiance in spite of being one made from molten quartz glass and to provide a light-transmitting member produced thereby.

SOLUTION: The method for producing the light-transmitting member is a method for producing a light-transmitting member by treating a raw light-transmitting member made of molten quartz glass and comprises subjecting the surface layer of the raw light-transmitting member to an oxygen-defect reduction treatment comprising a surface layer removal treatment or a surface heat treatment. The light-transmitting member is a light transmitting member made of molten quartz glass and is characterized in that the concentration of oxygen defect structures is 5×10-3mol/L or lower in its surface region. Alternatively, the light-transmitting member is a light-transmitting member made of titanium-containing molten quartz glass and is characterized in that the concentration of oxygen defect structures is 6×10-3mol/L or lower in its surface region.
