PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To selectively oxidize an aldehyde residue of ascochlorin, its analogue and a derivative thereof into a carboxylic acid. SOLUTION: All the phenolic hydroxy groups of the ascochlorin, its analogue and the derivative thereof are protected by alkylaton or acylation and the aromatic aldehyde group is selectively oxidized with an oxidizing agent to synthesize the corresponding carboxylic acid. The synthesized carboxylic acid is a ligand activating an intranuclear receptor superfamily such as a retinoid receptor, a retinoid-orphan receptor, a PPARα(peroxisome proliferator activator receptorα) or a PXR (a steroid receptor) and has therapeutic effects on diseases such as life style related diseases, chronic inflammations and cancers.
