PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal coated with a plurality of self-organized molecular membranes, its manufacturing method and a friction reducing method using the coated metal. SOLUTION: The metal has a molecular membrane of a mercaptocarboxylic acid, which is represented by the general formula: HS-(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>n</SB>-COOH (wherein n is an integer of 3-30), on its surface and is coated with a self-organized molecular membrane to which Cu ions for bonding first and second layers and an alkylthiol represented by the general formula: HS-R (wherein R is a 5-30C alkyl group) are bonded.
