An open ended spinning assembly has an opening cylinder with an array of serrated teeth arranged in raised helical rows on a raised continual root. The helical rows have a discontinuities (29) caused by the absence of teeth (9) otherwise present at regular intervals, and the absence of the raised continual root (28) at the same place. The discontinuity is a segment (30) around the cylinder circumference and extends through several neighbouring rows (27). The segments (30) are distributed regularly about the outer circumference (24).
