<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid size and cost increase of a continuously variable transmission, and to surely switch it over a neutral state in the continuously variable transmission. <P>SOLUTION: A primary shaft for driving a primary pulley is provided with a forward clutch incorporated in a forward/reverse switching mechanism, while a disengagement clutch is provided on a secondary shaft driven by a secondary pulley. The forward clutch is switched between an engaging state wherein the power from the secondary pulley is transmitted to a driving wheel and releasing state wherein the transmission is disconnected. When a neutral range is selected, release conditions of the disengagement clutch are determined (step S2, S3, S4). If all the release conditions are satisfied, the disengagement clutch is released (step S5).
