<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely perform an instructing operation of a switch in the condition apt to cause erroneous operation when a switch is operated. <P>SOLUTION: This rotary input device includes a dial 102 which can be rotated where the amounts of rotation of the dial 102 is detected by a dial position detecting means 104, and a pointer displayed on the display picture of a display 109 is moved on the basis of the amounts of rotation so that various items displayed on the display picture can be selected. A dial control arithmetic means 105 estimates the operation intention of an operator based on the operating speed in the operation start of the dial 102, and decides an operation reaction force according to the operation intention.
