PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device and a luminaire sharing an inverter control circuit and a power source of a boosting chopper control circuit. SOLUTION: In the discharge lamp lighting device including the boosting chopper circuit 12 for boosting a DC voltage rectified from an AC power-supply voltage and an inverter circuit 13 for converting an output of the boosting chopper circuit 12 into a high frequency AC voltage, a discharge lamp FL is turned on with an output of inverter circuit, a power source for controlling the circuit 12 and tinverter circuit 13 is obtained from the output of the inverter circuit 13 and when inverter circuit 13 is in a halt condition, the voltage fluctuation chopper circuit 12 is halted also.
