PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for bending a work with which the bending and the correction of the work can automatically be performed. SOLUTION: In the method for bending a sheet material, the work W is bent by controlling the position of a bending die with basic data for bending the work W at a target angle A and the bending angle is measured and a spring-back amount is calculated and also, the correcting value is calculated by using a correcting factor, and the above work is again bent based on the corrected feeding data. The bending angle is measured, and it is judged whether or not, the measured angle is within the permissible value of the above target angle and if the angle is within the permissible value, the above corrected value is stored in a correcting data table 33. Then, if the measured angle is not within the permissible value of the target angle, the spring-back amount is again calculated and also, the correcting value is again calculated by using the correcting factor, and the above work is re-again folded and the bending is repeated until the measured angle after bending becomes in the permissible value of the target value.
