The invention relates to silicon dioxide-coated nanoparticulate UV protectants that are obtainable by hydrothermal treatment of a nanoparticulate metal oxide and subsequent application of a silicon dioxide coating. The invention also relates to the production and the use of said protectants and to other novel compositions especially for topical use that are especially destined for the protection of the skin and/or hair from UV radiation. The invention further relates to the cosmetic use of said protectants.
