PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate from low voltage edges high voltage pulses having precise amplitudes and durations. SOLUTION: A pulse generating apparatus comprises: an impulse driver which differentiates an input signal edge into a positive transient impulse and a negative transient impulse, separately amplifies the positive transient impulse and the negative transient impulse and provides said amplification to a common output of the impulse driver, the impulse driver having an input for receiving a sequence of input signal edges of alternating input polarities; a capacitance which is coupled between the common output of the impulse driver and an AC ground; a complementary pair of series FET switches wherein the complemetary pair is parallel to a supplied voltage and gates of the complementary pair of FET switches are connected to the common output of the impulse driver; and a junction for the complementary pair of series FET switches, or the junction being a pulse output coupled so as to supply an output pulse.
