<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor light emitting device capable of controlling the directivity of light and causing no variations in color. <P>SOLUTION: In a semiconductor light emitting device having a protective film, the protective film comprises a photosensitive material provided with an inorganic compound as a principal chain and an organic compound as a functional group. For improvement in directivity, a desired refractive index distribution comprising a low refractive index region 11 and a high refractive index region 12 is formed in the protective film. Moreover, the low refractive index region of the protective film comprises MSQ(Methyl Silsesquioxane), and the high refractive index region has silazane coupling. Further, this invention is a method of manufacturing the semiconductor light emitting device forming the refractive index distribution comprising the low refractive index region and the high refractive index region in the protective film by UV irradiation. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
