PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a valve system showing extremely excellent low friction, wear resistance, seizure resistance, and durability, and capable of developing a more excellent fuel saving effect than the conventional combination of a steel material with an organic molybdenum compound. SOLUTION: This valve system slides under the presence of a lubricating oil and comprises a camshaft having a cam lobe and a cam journal and formed of a steel-based material. In the mechanism, one or both of the sliding surface of the camshaft and the sliding surface of a mating material formed of the steel-based material is coated with a hard carbon thin-film containing a hydrogen of 10 atom.% or less.
