Heading C2C. 2-Haloalkanoylacetamides of the formula where each R is a hydrogen atom or a C 1-6 alkyl group and X is a chlorine or bromine atom, are prepared by reacting the corresponding 2,2- dihaloalkanoylacetamides with a transition metal in an aqueous acidic solvent comprising at least one equivalent of hydroxylic solvent per mole of dihaloamide. The aqueous solvent may also contain a C 1-6 alkanol, a C 1-6 alkanoic acid and or urea and may be used in admixture with a water-miscible or water immiscible organic liquid. Specified transition metals are copper, iron, cobalt, nickel, cadmium, chromium, vanadium and manganese.
