PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a navigation system for an automobile and a navigation method for searching for a guide course for the automobile so as to bring a jam-up cost close to an actual jam-up cost when determining a guide course for a vehicle. SOLUTION: As to a course from a present position S to an intersection, an area jam-up cost Cijk is calculated as the sum total of weighted jam-up costs B on all links connected to respective intersections on the course. By repeating mutual comparison and calculation on node costs for respective courses including area jam-up costs Cijk at the respective intersections on a search course, a course minimizing the node costs is searched for as a guide course among courses reaching a destination G.
