PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a profitable method for producing a 4-hydroxydiphenyl ether. SOLUTION: This method for producing the 4-hydroxydiphenyl ether comprises the first process for reacting diphenyl ether with an acylating agent to obtain the 4-acyldiphenyl ether represented by formula (1) (R is an alkyl or aryl group which may have one or more substituents) and the second process for subjecting the 4-acyldiphenyl ether to an oxidation reaction and then to a solvolysis reaction.
