PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a linear power amplifier capable of controlling output power within a continuous power range in the case of a constant amplitude signal and performing linear amplification with high efficiency in the case of a non-constant amplitude signal. SOLUTION: This linear power amplifier comprises N (N is an integer is two or more) parallel amplitude adjusters for adjusting the amplitude of an input signal of the linear power amplifier; at least N power amplifying units for respectively amplifying signals from the respective amplitude adjusters; a power synthesizer for synthesizing respective signals from the power amplifying units and outputting an output signal of the linear power amplifier; and a controller for selecting a power amplifying unit to be operated among the N power amplifying units to operate the selected power amplifying unit so as to make the amplitude of the output signal to be a substantially continuous function to the amplitude of the input signal and controlling the amplitude adjusters.
