PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of conveying a document to a reading start position correctly even if the document slides during its conveyance. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with: a paper feed roller which conveys the document 25; a read part 14 which has a light source 14a and a photodetection part 14b; and a white reference roller 23 which is a reference of a white color in a document read. The front end of the document 25 conveyed the white reference roller 23 is irradiated with light from the light source 14a to form a shadow of the front end of the document 25 on the white reference roller 23, the photodetection part 14b detects the shadow, and the document 25 is conveyed by a specified quantity from a position where the shadow is detected to guide the document to a read start position.
