PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a disk for an existing MD system usable with a new MD system, and to make a disk for the new MD system usable with the existing system. SOLUTION: When an unused disk is loaded, it is initialized into the state of a blank disk where management information without data is written in a U-TOC , and then recording is carried out. Also, the disk for the existing MD system or the disk for the new MD system are arranged so as to be turned into blank disks when initialized. Thus, the disk for the existing MD system can be made usable with the new MD system, and the disk for the new MD system can be made usable with the existing system by initializing them into blank disks before recording is carried out according to the specification of the new MD or the existing MD.
