1297255 Unsaturated polyesters ARMSTRONG CORK CO 18 Nov 1969 [18 Nov 1968] 56475/69 Headings C3P and C3R An unsaturated polyester resin of minimum number average molecular weight 3000 as determined by end group analysis comprises the condensation product of (A) an alpha, beta ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, an anhydride thereof or a mixture thereof, (B) a compound of the formula in which R is an alkyl radical of 1-3 carbon atoms or a mixture thereof and (C) a diol component having a number average molecular weight of 115-445 and comprising at least one polyether diol having a maximum number average molecular weight of 2000 or a mixture of such a diol with, based on the total weight of (C), of up to 90% by weight of one or more alkylene glycols of the formula HO-R-OH in which R is an alkylene radical of 2-6 carbon atoms and the hydroxyl radicals are primary or secondary, (A) plus (B) representing approximately 50 mol per cent of the reactants and (C) representing the remaining approximately 50%, the polyester optionally being mixed with up to 20% by weight of a copolymerizable vinyl monomer, and when stated in terms of the initial reactants having a composition lying with an area bounded by the straight lines connecting points M, N, O and P in the drawing when component (C) is of the straight chain type and no vinyl monomer is present, the compositional limits being further defined when a portion of component (C) is a branched chain type and/or copolymerizable vinyl monomer is present by shifting lines M-N and O-P to the right F number of average molecular weight units in accordance with the equation in which M p represents the weight per cent of copolymerizable monomer present and WPT 2 the weight per cent of component (C) which is of the branched chain type. In examples (A) maleic anhydride or fumaric acid, (B) phthalic anhydride and possibly isophthalic acid or dimethyl terephthalate and (C) polyoxyethylene diol, co-poly-(oxypropylene oxyethylene)diol, polytetramethylene diol or polyoxypropylene diol with ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, neopentyl glyool or tetraethylene glycol, are polycondensed. The polyester may be chain extended to the desired molecular weight by reaction with an organic diisocyanate, e.g. 2,4- tolylene-diisocyanate. Specified vinyl monomers are styrene, vinyl toluene, chlorostyrene, diallylphthalate, acrylamide, diacetone acrylamide, aorylonitrile or an ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid. Compositions optionally also containing lubricants, fillers, plasticizers and initiators, may be polymerized in the presence of dicumyl peroxide, t-butyl perbenzoate, and t-butylperoxyisopropyl carbonate. |
