Method for optical recognition of alphanumeric characters

The method involves storing polygonal outer contours and inner contours of reference characters and their relative geometrical positions. An outer contour and inner contours of a character to be recognized are optically scanned. The character to be recognized is compared to the reference characters by shifting a character curve of an outer curve and reference curves of the outer contours.
