A binary input word U 1 -U 120 (Fig. 1) controls switches S 1 -S 120 connected to sense lines SL 1 -SL 120 selectively coupled to drive lines DL 1 -DL 6 which receive weighted signals so that at the output terminals of the operated switches analogue signals are generated. In the embodiment described m capacitive or inductive matrices are sequentially pulsed by parallel weighted signals from their associated voltage dividers 16 1 -16 m connected to the outputs of a ring counter 26 until the output signals applied to amplifier 14 reach a required level so that the last matrix pulsed represents the input word. Preferably four of the switches S 117 -S 120 are always closed so that at each output signal from ring counter 26 the combined output signal from these four switches represents the matrix from which the analogue voltages are being read out via switches S 1 -S 116 . When the matrix representing the input signal is read out an equal but opposite voltage is generated by the combined outputs of switches S 1 -S 116 , the zero level being detected by level detector 18 which stops via gate 22 the supply of pulses to counter 26. The arrangement may be used in character or speech recognition.</p> |
