Alcohols are prepared by oxidizing a cyclic paraffin, an iso paraffin or a normal paraffin containing at least 3 carbon atoms in the liquid phase at 100-250‹ C. using molecular oxygen in the presence of a catalyst which is a boric acid or boric acid anhydride, or a mixture thereof, suspended in the paraffin and in the presence of a promoter which is NH 3 , a urea, a thiourea, an amine, a carboxylic acid amide, a hydrazine, a hydrazide, an aminocarboxylic acid, a nitrogen heterocyclic base or a salt of any of these, and hydrolysing the reaction product to obtain the alcohol. Dehydration products of ortho boric acid are preferred catalysts. The promoter, of which a large number of examples are provided, is preferably used in amounts of 0À0001-1À0 mol. per mol. catalyst which in turn is employed in amounts of 0À01-10 moles starting paraffin. Examples relate to the preparation of a mixture of sec.-dodecanol, sec.-tridecanol and sec.-tetradecanol, isopropanol, cyclodecanol and cyclohexanol.
