Thermoplastic carrier strip 12 supports contacts 14 whose spacing corresponds to that of the conductors in a ribbon cable to which they are to be attached, a tail section of the contacts being encapsulated in a narrow edge portion of the carrier strip, and at least part of a mating portion extending beyond the other edge. The contacts may be female (Fig. 2, not shown), male (Fig. 4, not shown) or hermaphrodite. Pimples on the tail portion strengthen the connection between the contact and the carrier strip. To attach the contacts, the tail portions are aligned over the conductors of the ribbon cable, and the two are squeezed together by heated electrodes which melt the insulation and expose bare metal (Fig. 6, not shown). A welding current is passed to connect the contact to the conductor, and a protective insulating coating applied around the welded area. |
