Each pole comprises an inner pole (1) with supports (3-3'') arranged one above the other, an outer pole (2) with a support device (4) cooperating with a first support on the inner pole and a jack (7) with a rod (10) connecting the outer pole to a second support on the inner pole. The jack rod is supported directly by the second support. The supports are formed by recesses in the inner pole. A hydraulic jack or a pneumatic jack with a membrane cylinder is used. The support device is a lever with one end secured to the outer pole via a spring and one end which can be clamped inside a support on the inner pole. An independent claim is also included for a method for altering the height of a load extending over a wide surface area in a stepwise manner using this telescopic pole system, comprising the following steps: (a) anchoring a first pole in each telescopic pair in the ground or a foundation; (b) securing the load to the second pole; (c) raising the second pole using the jack until the support device engages with a first support on the first pole; and (d) retracting the jack until it engages with a second support above the first support so that the second pole can be lifted again.
