Shellfish (4) are supplied to a region defined by a support (6), a rotating roll (5) with a growth removing means (8) and a press device (7) and then moved in a direction parallel to the first roll length axis. A method for removing growth (especially barnacles) from shellfish such as mussels comprises the following steps: (a) supplying shellfish to a region defined by a support, a first roll with a growth removing means and a press device; (b) removing at least some of the growth by rotating the first roll about its length axis; (c) moving the shellfish in a direction substantially parallel to the first roll length axis; and (d) removing the at least partially cleaned shellfish.
