The item of seating furniture (1), such as a chair or sofa, comprises a frame (2) on which a seat (3) is fitted. A tippable backrest (4) is fitted on the frame in relation to the seat. At least two adjustable arm rests (5) are provided between the frame and the backrest. On the frame is at least one ridge (6) for each arm rest. On the arm rets are at least two parallel ribs which work in conjunction with the corresponding ridge, which define at least two ribs forming the uprights of the adjustable arm rests. Each arm rest has a hood for covering the at least two ribs. Each hood has at least one groove, through which the corresponding ridge extends. The item conforms to European Standard EN581-1.
