[Also in Divisions C3 and C4] A corrosion preventative paint composition comprises (a) 100 parts by weight of a condensate of cashew nut shell liquid, bhilawan nut shell liquid or an urushi lacquer liquid, an aromatic acid or polyhydric phenol and formalin prepared in the presence of an acidic catalyst, (b) 10-100 parts by weight of an animal or vegetable, drying or semi-drying oil and (c) a pigment. "Urushi (lacquer) liquid" includes laccol and thitsiol. The aromatic acid or polyhydric phenol may be diphenolic acid, benzoic acid, terephthalic acid, pyrocatechol, phloroglucinal, resorcinol, gallic acid, salicylic acid or protocatechualdehyde. The acid may be HCI. Water of condensation may be removed azeotropically with xylene. The drying oil or semi-drying oil may be linseed oil, tung oil or fish oil. The pigment may be iron oxide, talc, TiO 2 or red lead. The composition may also include a solvent, eg. xylene or mineral turpentine, and a flow retarding agent. When sprayed or brushed on to mild steel, corroded mild steel, corroded copper or aluminium it forms a chelate with the metal.</p> |
