In a shaft seal comprising a sealing ring of elastomeric material having a sealing lip with a circumferential sealing edge 5 between inner and outer frusto-conical surfaces 7 and 6 the outer surface 6, which in use faces away from the sealed fluid, is formed with at least one ridge 8 which lies in a plane oblique to the plane of the edge 5 at an angle of not more than 20 degrees and the ends 9, 10 of which intercept the edge 5 and present a pair of oppositely-directed vane surfaces. The angle of obliquity of the ridges is preferably not more than 3 degrees. In the embodiment shown the angle is 1 degree and two of the ridges intercept the edge 5. It is stated that in use the ridges act to oppose leakage by a feedback effect irrespective of the direction of rotation of the shaft. |
