A filter tow strip is extracted from a store and spread out along a conveyor section where the filter material is sprayed with fluid and finally gathered up to reduce the strip width. On at least one stretch (3,6,7) of the conveyor section the filter tow strip (1) is exposed to an air current (24,32,39) flowing in the filter tow strip's direction of travel and situated in a wind-tunnel (23,31,38).
