FIELD: organic chemistry, chemical technology. ^ SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for preparing 2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutanoic acid. Method involves the following stages: hydrolysis of 2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutane nitrile and/or 2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutaneamide in the presence of sulfuric acid for preparing a reaction mixture containing 2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutanoic acid; mixing the reaction mixture with an alkaline metal basic compound for preparing a mixture containing an oily layer comprising 2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutanoic acid and an aqueous layer; isolation of an aoily layer comprising 2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutanoic acid from the mixture; concentrating an oily layer and removing insoluble material from the concentrated liquid.
