A door opening device to assist a person bound to a wheelchair to open and close doors, which consists of an elongate body (2) that is held to a door (11) by two brackets (12, 13). A grip projects from the body (2) and forms a door handle capture zone with the body (2). The elongate body (2) is able to slide and rotate in the brackets (12, 13). A user slides the body (2) in the brackets (12, 13) to unlatch and open the door (11). A spring means biases the elongate body (2) to a latched position. The door opening device may also include a latching mechanism in the form of a floor engaging portion that engages a keyway in the floor.
