Apparatus (4) for detecting abnormal operation of a forging system (3) incorporates of an electric feed unit (42) providing the current to operate the forging system, a control unit (44) coupled to the electric feed unit and a current control unit (43) coupled to the control unit and the electric feed unit. The current control unit samples the electric operating current to obtain a reference operating current value, compares the controlled quantity of electric operating current with the reference value to determine a threshold value to be crossed, allows the control unit to interrupt the electric feed current when this threshold value has been crossed and periodically updates the reference operating current value.
