<p>In a process to recycle municipal biological refuse, the refuse is deposited in holding container (3) from which it is progressively transferred by conveyer (7) to a water basin (5) where it is spread out, allowing heavy items to sink. Floating items are moved to a crusher/grinder (22) and are then separated into portions for composting or fermentation. Also claimed is an assembly with a holding container (3) and a water basin (5) in which refuse floats or sinks. A cam-operated separator (11) with separator tool repeatedly dips into and moves the floating refuse through the basin towards an inclined conveyer (9). Heavy items sink and migrate into channels (10) for removal. Floating refuse is raised by the conveyer (9) and deposited onto a separator wheel (23).
