PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for enhancing an image are provided to adaptively enhance an image related to brightness and chromatic components by considering color gamut and skin tone, and maintain brightness and saturation components in a skin tone area. CONSTITUTION: A color gamut range detecting unit(102) detects a color gamut range of a given pixel. A brightness adaptation processing unit(103) outputs a brightness signal adaptively enhancing an image related to brightness of the given pixel by using weight according to brightness of the given pixel by considering the color gamut range information of the brightness of the given pixel and color gamut mapping. A saturation adaptation processing unit(104) outputs a saturation signal adaptively enhancing an image related to saturation of the given pixel by using weight according to saturation of the given pixel by considering the color gamut range information of the saturation of the given pixel and color gamut mapping.
