A method of cutting into pieces annular or sleeve-shaped workpieces 4, such as piston rings or cylinder liner blanks, comprises inserting the workpiece in a substantially semicircular loop 6 of an endless chain, band or belt 5 which is firmly tensioned against that portion of the outer periphery of the workpiece remote from the zone of engagement of the cutting tool 7, the workpiece being pressed against the tool and rotated by the endless belt. The belt is supported on three rollers 1, 2, 3, roller 1 being driven and adjustable to accommodate different sizes of workpiece, and roller 3 being adjustable to tension the belt. The workpieces may be held stationary while the saw is first fed rapidly through a distance A and then slowly through a distance B until the saw has penetrated the workpieee which is then rotated to cut the workpiece in two, or, the workpiece may be rotated rapidly while the saw is slowly advanced through the workpeice. A number of workpieces axially located by end rollers may be cut by a plurality of saws. The band may be in the form of a chain and more than one belt may be arranged in juxtaposed positions. The cutting tool may remain stationary and the workpiece be fed towards the tool. |
