PURPOSE: An image pickup device and a method for controlling white balance of an image pickup device are provided to realize white balance optimized to a photographing environment by differentiating white balance control algorithm within the house or in the open air, thereby obtaining a visually natural image regardless of a change of a light source. CONSTITUTION: A digital signal processor(130) detects a color temperature from an image signal and controls a red signal and a blue signal of the image signal corresponding to an inputted white balance control signal. A control unit(140) transmits the white balance control signal to the digital signal processor, wherein the white balance control signal is generated based on a white balance mode set according to a photographing environment and the detected color temperature. A key input unit(150) has a key for selecting the white balance mode. A display unit(160) displays the image signal controlled by the digital signal processor.
