PURPOSE: An alternative routing method and a device of text-based messages in a wireless telephone network are provided to determine whether a message is transmitted to a user, and to send the message through a wireless network or to transmit the message after formatting as an instant message, thereby routing a text message to an alternative destination. CONSTITUTION: A server(110) supplies a connection to a destination which receives text messages for one of telephones(104A,104B), and formats the text messages to send the formatted messages to the alternative destination. An MSC(102) receives the text messages. The MSC(102) inquires about user profiles associated with the receiving one of the telephones(104A,104B) to determine user preferences with regards to a message routing, identifies conditions influencing a desired routing of the messages, transmits the messages to the receiving one of the telephones(104A,104B) as a text-based message, and sends the message to the server(110). The destination is associated with a user of the receiving one of the telephones(104A,104B).
