PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely deliver documents, by making a space between the documents carried to platen glass constant. SOLUTION: This automatic document feeder has a register reversing roller 9 for carrying the document separated by separating parts 20 and 21 for separating the document one by one from a document tray 1 to the platen glass 51, a carrier belt 6 for carrying the carried document on the platen glass, paper delivery roller pairs 60 and 61 for delivering the document read in a reading position of the platen glass, a paper delivery tray 18 for loading the document delivered by the paper delivery roller pairs, and a control means for controlling the carrier belt so as to adjust an inter-paper space of the documents carried to the platen glass constant. The control means controls the carrier belt so as to stop the document, and controls the register reversing roller and the carrier belt so that a distance between the document tip and the paper delivery roller 60 most approaching the paper delivery roller 60 in a document-stopped state, becomes smaller than an inter-paper distance between respective paper.
