It is possible to detect an error in text data recorded in a CD of the CD-TEXT format and perform appropriate display. In a case of text data recorded in 2-byte character code (step 1002), an error is detected when the text data is XX 00 (step 1006) or 00 XX (step 1008). Alternatively, the character position is decided by counting the characters recorded and an error is detected by correlating it with the character position information recorded.
