PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform printing stably regardless of whether a medium is a bankbook or a slip by controlling the force of a platen for pressing the medium appropriately depending on the thickness of the medium through a simple arrangement, and to prevent the medium from skewing. SOLUTION: The printer comprises a print head printing on a medium by moving in the direction intersecting the carrying direction of the medium perpendicularly, a guide member moving together with the print head and touching the upper surface of the medium to sustain the gap between the print head and the medium, and a platen moving up and down with respect to the print head and pressing the medium against the guide member from below. The platen is fixed to a supporting member through a spring member and urged upward by the spring member. When the thickness of the medium exceeds a specified value, the platen is urged further upward by a spring force reinforcing mechanism. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
