PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for giving a photocatalytic activity with a high response to a visible light by an easy technique to various substrates such as ceramics, metals, glass, plastics, paper, and wood, and to heat-sensitive substrates such as plastics without damaging their design properties as well. SOLUTION: In a process of synthesizing titanium oxide containing brookite crystals, a sol of titanium oxide containing brookite crystals which contains nitrogen is obtained by bringing it into contact with a nitrogen-containing compound. A thin film obtained from the sol is transparent and has a response to a visible light as a photocatalyst. Therefore, it gives a photocatalytic activity responding to a visible light to various substrates without damaging their design properties. Besides, this method is applicable to heat-sensitive substrates since firing at a high temperature is unnecessary in forming the thin film. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
