PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a fluoropolymer of high molecular weight. SOLUTION: In the presence of a radical initiator, a monomer mixture of which at least a part is a fluoro-monomer is radical-polymerized in a polymerization medium including one or more kinds selected from carbon dioxide and halogenated hydrocarbons of one or two carbon atoms, at a reaction temperature in the range of from the critical point of the polymerization medium to 20°C higher than the critical point under the pressure of from the critical one of the polymerization medium to 30 MPa higher than the critical pressure of the polymerization medium. Under these temperature and pressure conditions, the heat of reaction accompanied by polymerization of fluoro-monomer can be readily diffused and the solvation of the polymerization medium to the fluoro-monomer is poor, thus, fluoropolymer of high molecular weight can be produced.
