A light-duty liquid detergent composition consists of or comprises an essential mixture of non-soap surface-active agents, said mixture comprising from 10 to 95% by weight thereof of a component (A) consisting of water-soluble surface-active sulphate esters of the formula Z(OC2H4)mOSO3M; and from 5 to 90% by weight thereof of a component (B) consisting of surface active betaines of the formula where, in each of said formulae, A represents an alkyl or alkenyl group having from 8 to 18 carbon atoms, Z is a group of Formula A or is an alkyl phenyl group possessing an alkyl substituent having from 6 to 16 carbon atoms, M is a cation, m has a value of from 0 to 20 (but is at least 1 when Z is an alkyl phenyl group), R1 and R2 are each methyl, ethyl, hydroxyethyl or hydroxypropyl, and B is an anionic group of the formula-(CH2)2CO-2 or -(CH2)zOSO-3 (wherein z has a value of 1, 2 or 3). In the component (A) the cation M may be sodium, potassium, magnesium, ammonium, lithium, monoethanol ammonium, or triethanol ammonium. The group Z may be lauryl, cetyl, oleyl, stearyl, lauryl - trioxyethylene, cetyl - dioxyethylene, p - octyl - phenyl - tetraoxyethylene or p-nonylphenyl-trioxyethylene. The group A in the component (B) may be lauryl, cetyl, stearyl or oleyl. The composition may also contain foam stabilizers of which many examples are given, and other surface active agents such as alkyl benzene sulphonate salts, sulphosuccinate salts, tauride compounds, alkyl polyoxyethylene ethanols or alkyl phenyl polyoxy ethylene ethanols. Medicaments such as hexachlorophene or 2,2,4 - trichlorocarbanalide and opacifying agents such as ethylene or propylene glycol monostearate may also be included. The compositions may be dissolved in water or in aqueous alcohol or may be thickened for example by a soap. They may also contain inorganic sulphate impurities. Examples are given of compositions suitable as dish-washers and as shampoos.
