<PICT:1069353/C1/1> A fabric 13 is bonded to a glass panel 17 by coating the marginal edge 22 of the glass 17 with an adhesive primer 23, coating the primed area of the glass with a dielectrically bondable material 24 compatible with a vinyl coating on the fabric, placing the marginal area of the glass 17 in contact with a vinyl coated marginal area of the fabric 13 so that the marginal areas of the glass and fabric overlap, and dielectrically bonding the overlapping areas together. As shown, the fabric comprises two layers 19, 20 which are separated to receive the glass 17 and each consisting of a canvas-like material which is vinyl coated. Preferably, this coating is part of the fabric. Alternatively, the fabric may be uncoated and the vinyl coating applied to the marginal edge portions thereof to be bonded to the glass 17. Prior to applying the adhesive primer 23, the area 22 is wiped with solvent to remove any contamination or is roughened by chemical etching, sand blasting or grinding. In a modification (not shown), a single layer of fabric is attached to one side of a glass panel. The invention is applicable to bonding the rear window to the foldable roof of a convertible motor vehicle. |
