The broken-away refractory lining of a metallurgical furnace consisting of calcined dolomite bricks is broken down into a dry powder by being brought into contact with water and/or steam while the bricks are still hot, the water and/or steam being used in such a quantity so that the quantity taken up by the bricks is from 100-200 kg. per 1000 kg. of dolomite bricks; excess water and/or steam is added to allow for evaporation and loss of steam to the atmosphere but the total quantity of water and/or steam added is never more than 450 kg. per ton of dolomite bricks. The calcined dolomite bricks are broken down by the process into powder which after at least one hour after contacting the bricks with water may be sucked away, leaving behind any steel or clinker particles present. Air may be introduced into the lower part of the layer of dolomite bricks during the removal of the dolomite powder in order to fluidize said powder. The powder may be sieved and the coarser fraction (e.g. greater than 3 mm.) may be returned. The water and/or steam is preferably supplied at a rate of 2 to 6 kg. per minute per ton of dolomite bricks.</p> |
