1,208,341. Partial oxidation of hydrocarbons. HALCON INTERNATIONAL Inc. 16 Jan., 1968 [17 Jan., 1967], No. 2411/68. Heading C2C. A process for the partial oxidation of a hydrocarbon with molecular oxygen in the presence of a boron comopund comprises hydrolysing the effluent from the oxidation, which contains unreacted hydrocarbon and borate esters of the corresponding alcohol, with water to form an organic phase containing unreacted hydrocarbon and the bulk of the alcohol and an aqueous phase containing the boron compound and the residual amount of the alcohol, passing the organic phase to a distillation zone operated at pressure to separate the unreacted hydrocarbon from the bulk of the alcohol and steamstripping a portion of the aqueous phase in a stripping zone under pressure and passing the vapours obtained to said distillation zone, thereby separating the residual amount of the alcohol along with the bulk of the alcohol. Suitable reactants are saturated C 4-20 hydrocarbons, particularly cyclohexane, the preparation of which is exemplified. The corresponding ketone is formed as a by-product of the oxidation and is recovered with the bulk of the alcohol from the organic phase after hydrolysis.
