[Also in Division A4] A brush having bristles formed integrally with a backing portion is injection moulded in a mould cavity comprising a number of plates 8 forced together in face to face relation, the plates having staggered rows of slots 10 providing bristle forming cavities which connect with a further cavity providing the backing portion. Each bristle may be of tapering shape with a forked end. In a modification, the slots are not staggered, and each pair of slotted plates has a separator plate therebetween. The edges of the slots may be bevelled; some of the slots may be blanked off during the moulding to provide an unbristled area of a desired pattern. The injection moulding apparatus of Fig. 17 has two sets of slotted plates or laminations 95 fed with moulding material, e.g. polyethylene or polypropylene, via a nozzle 52 and passages 54, 55 to produce two brushes 100. The laminations of each set are carried by pins 90 and forced together by end blocks 91 with outer inclined surfaces which co-operate with similarly inclined surfaces of plates 85 fixed to an upper mould part 57. The plates 85 are slotted to receive the ends of the pins 90, and when the parts 57 and 58 are separated at the end of the moulding stage springs 96 push the sets of laminations downwards allowing adjacent laminations to move apart; a plate 56 is moved away from the part 57 by springs 80. The moulded brushes are retained on the lower mould part and are removed therefrom by an ejector 68 with upstanding pins 72 forced upwardly by a rod 69. A floor tile with upstanding bristles may be similarly produced.
