<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a direct current brushless motor from being erroneously driven and reduce noises and washing hours in an inverter washing machine, in which a stirrer is directly driven by the motor. <P>SOLUTION: The inverter washing machine temporarily stops energizing the motor 7 when it detects that the motor 7 is rotated reversely to the desired rotating direction on the basis of rotor position signals Hu, Hv and Hw indicating the rotational positions of a rotor of the motor 7 during the intermittent normal and reverse operations of the motor 7. In addition, the washing machine is provided with a speed-reducing period for reducing the rotating speed of the motor 7 just before a normal or reverse rotation period is shifted to a rest period, during which the brake is applied to the motor 7 to keep it in a stationary state. Moreover, the motor 7 is driven in such a way as to detect a current flowing therein and reduce it.
